Early in its history, Milpitas was a crossroads between Mission San José
de Guadalupe and Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The area began as two separate
Spanish land grants; the recipients built adobe homes on their properties,
which are both still standing today.
Although established in the late 18th century, Milpitas was not incorporated
as a city until 1954. Today, it covers just over 13.6 square miles and
is home to a population of 70,092.
